Causing Factors of Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA)

Rheumatoid Arthritis (Rheumatoid arthritis, RA) is a kind of arthritis characterized by chronic aggressive systemic autoimmune damage. Rheumatoid arthritis is characterized by lesions of synovitis, and the resulting destruction of articular cartilage and bones, and joint deformity .
Causing factors of Rheumatoid Arthritis
The etiology of rheumatoid arthritis is not clear. Generally it is believed that genetic , environmental, infection and other factors are closely related to the occurrence of the disease.
Genetic factors
First degree relatives of patients with rheumatoid arthritis are 1.5 times more likely to suffer from this disease than the general population. Studies on twins showed that genetic factors account for 50 % to 60% among all the causing factors of rheumatoid arthritis. Susceptibility genes associated with rheumatoid arthritis include HLA-DR, PADI4 and PTPN22 and so on.
Infectious factors
Certain viral and bacterial infections may act as initiating factors to activate immune response carrying susceptibility genes, thus leading to the onset of rheumatoid arthritis.
Pathogens associated with rheumatoid arthritis include EB virus, parvovirus B19, influenza virus and Mycobacterium.
Sex hormones
Incidence ratio of male to female ratio is 1:2 to 4, which suggests that sex hormones may be involved in the pathogenesis. In addition, the illness condition of women with rheumatoid arthritis during pregnancy can be relieved, but1 to 3 months after childbirth, the disease may recur, suggesting that the drop of progesterone or estrogen levels may be related to the pathogenesis of rheumatoid arthritis.
Other factors
Smoking, cold, trauma, mental stimulation and other factors may be associated with the occurrence of rheumatoid arthritis .
The above introduces the causing factors of Rheumatoid. Patients with this disease are suggested to actively treat it at early time so as to control the illness condition and improve the prognosis.
