Burdock contains many useful chemicals including biotin, copper, manganese, iron, Vitamins B and E, zinc, sulfur and inulin. Burdock contains fatty oils which (along with its sterols and tannins) contribute to burdock’s reputation as an anti-inflammatory food. The herb burdock is believed to have a cleansing action when taken internally and has been used historically to treat skin conditions. Burdock root is an effective painkiller that can help alleviate symptoms of inflammation that affect auto-immune disorders such as rheumatoid arthritis, fibromyalgia, bursitis, lupus, and Diabetes.
A root decoction of burdock has been reported useful in the treatment of gout, rheumatism, and dropsy. Recent scientific experiments have shown that burdock root extracts is a diuretic and inhibited tumors in animals. Burdock also reduces congestion of the liver and gallbladder, improves digestion and appetite, helps alleviate chronic constipation, and also benefits inflammatory conditions of the urinary tract such as cystitis. It also has antibacterial and antifungal properties. The active antibacterial compound is identified as lactone.
